Student Association’s 2020-21 Permanent Initiatives

Permanent initiatives are initiatives voted on during the last meeting of every session by every assembly. These initiatives were voted on April 27, 2020 by the 63rd legislative session. 

These initiatives include Cuse Otto Vote, the GRE Prep program, the Study Spot Index, the Non-Profit Community Engagement Fair, Spring Into Action (civic engagement promotion), Mental Health Awareness Week, and providing free menstrual products to students in bathrooms across campus. 

Included on the page is the contact information for each SA representative associated with each initiative in case you have questions, comments, concerns, and/or even want to get involved. You can also contact  StudentAssociation@syr.edu .

Cuse Otto Vote

Cuse Otto Vote is an initiative with the goal of increasing voter turnout and greater civic engagement for Syracuse University and SUNY-ESF Students, and will host voter registration drives, incorporate TurboVote onto campus. It will help SU in its quest to become a voter friendly campus, host town halls with local candidates, and inform students on how to vote. The Cuse Otto Vote initiative will be a permanent Student Association initiative and maintain active status throughout the sessions of Student Association. It will be housed under the leadership and organization of the Board of Elections and Membership. The authority of the Board of Elections and Membership to hold discretion for the Cuse Otto Vote initiative will take into effect beginning for the 64th session of the Student Association.

GRE Prep Program

The GRE Prep Program is an initiative which seeks to support students pursuing graduate school, and is meant to fill a gap in the student experience and prepare students for their Graduate Record Examination. The program seeks to eventually expand and launch support for other tests including but not limited to the LSAT, GMAT and MCAT. The Academic Affairs chair worked with various administrators and has created a plan for the program’s continuation into next school year. The GRE Prep Program will be a permanent Student Association initiative and maintain active status throughout the sessions of Student Association. It will be housed under the leadership and organization of the Academic Affairs Chair and Academic Affairs Committee. The authority of the GRE Prep Program Ad-Hoc Committee (made up of the Academic Affairs Chair, Vishwas Paul, and University administrative members) will hold discretion for the  GRE Prep Program initiative which will take into effect beginning for the 64th session of the Student Association.

Study Spot Index

The Study Spot Index will offer students an index of all of the places on campus to study and will assist in relieving Carnegie and Bird libraries which get congested during midterms and finals. Additionally, it will provide students with peaceful and productive study space options. The Study Spot Index will be a permanent Student Association initiative and maintain active status throughout the sessions of Student Association. As a Student Association initiative, it will be housed under the leadership and organization of the Academic Affairs Committee. The authority of the Academic Affairs Committee to hold discretion for the Study Spot Index initiative will take into effect beginning for the 64th session of the Student Association.

Non-Profit Community Engagement Fair

The Non-Profit Community Engagement Fair invites nonprofits and government agencies in the City of Syracuse to the campus for a day who are looking for interns, volunteers, or to fill paid positions. The Community Engagement Committee anticipates the Non-Profit Community Engagement Fair will be conducted once in the fall and once in the spring. The Non-Profit Community Engagement Fair will be a permanent Student Association initiative and maintain active status throughout the sessions of Student Association and, as a Student Association initiative, will be housed under the leadership and organization of the Community Engagement Committee. The authority of the Community Engagement Committee to hold discretion for the Non-Profit Community Engagement Fair initiative will take into effect beginning for the 64th session of the Student Association.

Spring Into Action

Spring into Action would bring students together to complete civic engagement hours. Through the program, the Student Association would host events and panel discussions every weekend of the month pertaining to a wide variety of civic engagement topics, and would hold regular instagram takeover pertaining to a variety of volunteering events. Spring into Action will be a permanent Student Association initiative and maintain active status throughout the sessions of Student Association. Spring into Action, as a Student Association initiative, will be housed under the leadership and organization of the Community Engagement Committee. The authority of the Community Engagement Committee to hold discretion for the Spring into Action initiative will take into effect beginning for the 64th session of the Student Association.

Mental Health Awareness Week 

The Mental Health Awareness Week is a week in October dedicated to sparking the conversation about mental health and the stigma around it. The Student Association hosts special programming during Mental Health Awareness Week featuring creative expression, dialogue, and activities on the Shaw Quad. Mental Health Awareness Week will be a permanent Student Association initiative and maintain active status throughout the sessions of Student Association. Mental Health Awareness Week, as a Student Association initiative, will be housed under the leadership and organization of the Executive Branch. The authority of the Executive Branch to hold discretion for the Mental Health Awareness Week initiative will take into effect beginning for the 64th session of the Student Association.

Menstrual Products

The Menstrual Products initiative supports students by providing free menstrual products to students in bathrooms across campus. Through the Menstrual Products initiative, the Student Life Committee quadrupled the amount of menstrual products and dispensers that Student Association sponsors. Due to circumstances with COVID-19 and cancellation of residential classes, the Student Life Committee could not see through the installation and implementation of Menstrual Health products, leaving room for expansion on this initiative. Menstrual Products will be a permanent Student Association initiative and maintain active status throughout the sessions of Student Association. Menstrual Products, as a Student Association initiative, will be housed under the leadership and organization of the Student Life Committee.. The authority of the Student Life Committee to hold discretion for the Menstrual Products initiative will take into effect beginning for the 64th session of the Student Association.
