The Student Association has partnered with:
to conduct the Syracuse Racial Justice Fundraiser.
The purpose of this University-wide fundraiser is to raise money for the organizations in our Syracuse community who are doing important work for racial justice. The fundraiser is open to just about everyone but especially SU students, administrators, faculty, staff, alumni, etc.
Donation Links (all donations go directly to the organizations):
Mission Statement: “To serve the city of Syracuse and Central New York to reduce the violence that has afflicted our community through grassroots outreach and a boots on the ground effort to reach out to people and bring positive change.”
“Unchained is an organization based in Syracuse, NY with a mission to dismantle the carceral state – the white supremacist apparatus that includes police, prosecutors, jails/prisons, parole/probation, ICE, and other forms of surveillance or criminalization. We invest in people locked up by police and locked out of schools – mostly Black and Brown folks and poor people – to build power and chart a path toward liberation by making racial and economic justice a reality.”
“Black Leadership Coalition’s mission is to build a culture of political engagement within Black/Brown Communities. We create spaces of conversation and advocacy around issues impacting Black people. We believe those in office and those seeking office must be held accountable for the policies they seek to implement and must be able to speak clearly to communities of color.”
“The Alliance of Communities Transforming Syracuse (ACTS) is a grassroots, interfaith network advocating for social justice. We are voices striving for a more just and fair community that improves the quality of life for all in Onondaga County.”
“Syracuse NAN works within the spirit and tradition of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to promote a modern civil rights agenda.”
“The Our Time Has Come Scholarship creates possibility for Black and Latino students at Syracuse University” including establishing endowed scholarships for those populations.
Although these three organizations could not ultimately join the fundraiser for a variety of reasons, we would like to highlight the important work they’re doing for our community and ask that you find other ways to support them:
“Syracuse Police Accountability and Reform Coalition (SPAARC) is a grassroots collective committed to transformational, citizen-led police reform.”
“Our mission is to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate race-based discrimination.”
“The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) is one of the nation’s foremost defenders of civil liberties and civil rights.”
We completely understand that not everyone is in a financial position to donate, especially during the current times. Again, there are other ways to support these organizations including volunteering, attending their events, supporting/sharing their content on social media, etc. We also highly recommend checking out the Anti Racism Resources section on our Student Resources page so you can find ways to educate yourself and others on anti-racism, sign petitions, find various organizations to support, etc. If you would like to share resources with us to include on this page, we encourage you to do so! Please reach out to StudentAssociation@syr.edu as we want this page to be as inclusive and expansive as possible.
If you would like to promote the fundraiser on your social media pages/communication channels, two graphics are included below. Thank you!
